People and Fates. Szondiana in Psychological Counseling

The monograph "People and Fates. Szondiana in Psychological Counseling" was nominated for the title of the Best Book of Psychology in 2017 at the National "Golden Psyche" Competition:

https://psy.su/psyche/projects/1984/

The word "Fates" or "Destinies" didn't match to the mindset of the authors, so another name "Sagacity Practicum. Szondiana in Psychological Counseling" was chosen to present this original book on psychodiagnostics to the English speaking reader.

Sagacity Practicum

The title 'Sagacity Practicum' spellbinds. A vivid imagination immediately draws on a little brown bottle with an ornate label in the background of potion store and promises to the hero who dares to drink from it an exclusive wisdom.

However, this designation prefaces the book not about magic, but about marriage counseling, family psychotherapy, and kinship psychology and research.

Frankly, aforementioned list promptly carries the reader's associations into deep gloom. Who reads the books about the family relationship being happy together?!

The quintessential definition for the book genre is 'provocative thinking'. You will face provocative thinking about provocative subjects.

I won't conceal the discouraging truth - it's manual on family psychology destined to smart people. The reader of 'Sagacity Practicum' must possess the brains and open-mindedness. Say 'Goodbye' to your usual ideas and well-learned stereotypes about the family life. New psychodiagnostic frames once embodied into the mind cannot be canceled.

Now you are getting warned. Let's take a closer look at the eight levels of psychodiagnostics and get acquainted with the art of making a personality evaluation.

Introduction

Psychodiagnostics is a branch of psychology which deals with the psychological evaluation of character and relationships. The term 'psychodiagnostics' came from European tradition; in the American tradition it is known as 'psychological assessment'.

Nowadays the field of evaluation is conventionally recognized as a science concerned with the use of tests and investigation of psychological factors underlying human behavior. And what about the art of keen eye and shrewdness?

Here they are! Fairy tales, anecdote cases, and movies give us some types of characters: clever heroes, savvy detectives, and insightful doctors. Their inherent practical sagacity and pragmatic anticipation already staked out domains in the public mind. Psychologists more likely appear wherein like a figure from a caricature scene about rigid 'patient-sitter' near the coach. It sounds bad, but the mass culture has a lot of doubt in psychologists' judgment. It's time to bring to light something new and dispel the common misconception.

Mental health professionals have accumulated a vast experience in comprehending of partnership and do have useful nonverbal tools for prognosis and assessment. Why do we know nothing about their widespread implementation? 'No research – no approval'. It may be named America's default EBPPiness and means the updated requirements of evidence-based psychological practice.

A bad workman always blames his tools, while a silly psychologist always complains about his setting. However, the home truth about modern psychology as an academic science is not in double-blind randomized controlled trials in the field which are unavailable so far.

Actually, we don't have either the mindset to understand what is happening in partnership nor concepts to describe its complexity, despite the facts that different kinds of the partnership are accompanying us throughout life and Western society has accumulated the extensive experience in psychological problems treatment.

Eight levels of psychodiagnostics provide both a mindset and a conceptual framework. In daily routine, the usage of new skills will broaden your horizons and will change your understanding of co-workers, friends and family members. Due to the purchased sagacity, you may discover courage and wisdom to improve your personal ties. And what is much more important, its application will turn you into professional equipped with incredible predictive power in a counseling operation.
Below you will find a digest of an amazing book written by two professional psychotherapists, Olga Bermant-Polyakova Ph.D. and Ilona Romanova Ph.D. The original text is entitled "People and Fates. Szondiana in Psychological Counseling".

A ponderous volume in Russian, introducing a comprehensive system named non-classical szondiana, presents the well-edited transcript of the workshop for mental health professionals held in Ekaterinburg in April 2016. It contains three sections which are devoted to training in observation, sagacity and family counseling.

Honestly, the book is huge. The first section includes 17 chapters, the second contains 9 chapters and the third counts 14 chapters for a total of 40 chapters. Each section ends with ten control questions and a quiz. The cited bibliography has 190 references. Throughout the text, the authors put 120 exercises.

The vast theoretical material is explained by four Appendixes. The first appendix contains 13 texts with biographical material. The second appendix cites numerous examples from the transcript and is divided into 4 verbatim. The third appendix provides 4 neuropsychological articles. The fourth appendix describes the mores and the practices and includes 17 texts.
The extensive clinical material is illustrated by 25 voluminous cases about children, spouse, and child-parent relationship and brings out a never-ending psychological interplay of three generation into one kinship.

Massive social-cultural material concerning sociological and historical issues from the psychodiagnostic point of view is marshaled in 70 biographies of famous Russian people from XVIII up to XXI century (the only exception for foreign citizens was made for American businessman Isaak Singer, the inventor of the sewing machine because handmade sewing is menta-fact for Russian mentality). The names index contains references to 465 historical and political figures.

However, the 700 pages of the monograph are notable not only because of the authors' astonishing ability to process tons of human sciences information. It perfectly fits the 'provocative thinking' book genre.

It seems sacrilegious to say this, but 'The Story of Steve J. Revisited', where szondiana was applied to the psychological interpretation of the world famous business icon Steve Jobs, is overtaking the monograph in the run to the edge. It's becoming very clear that publishing a re-written story about Jobs's family manifests provocative thinking about a provocative subject in provocative social-political circumstances.

To summarize, a 2017th brought up a new fascinating approach in psychodiagnostics. The 'People and Fates. Szondiana in Psychological Counseling' is an interesting and exciting book in Russian whose pages capture your attention immediately, turn your mind in a few weeks and leave an aftertaste for months.

May be one day you will read it wholly, but right now you are holding in your hands the digest of the book which includes three different pieces: one paragraph from the monography providing a part of the workshop verbatim named 'Sagacity with children's toys' translated into English; the synopsis of theoretical framework presented in the main 40 chapters named 'Eight levels of psychodiagnostics', especially written for this edition, with references to modern Western researches in the field; and the complete table of contents interlineally translated from Russian edition. Treat 'Sagacity Practicum. Szondiana in Psychological Counseling' as a long read for one evening.

Sagacity with children's toys

"Children with the powerful m+ need have a passion for to food. In the kid's bedroom, the best place among the (d) toys is reserved for the beloved favorite one – the little kitchen play set.
- All my kids are playing with their ice-cream. By the way, my daughter is six and while my son is four years old. But However, the nephew didn't like it, - one mother tells.
- And mine is eight, and she is the fan of their cookies, - other shares.
The word "their" in the verbatim relates to the manufacturer of playsets. Children with the powerful m+, both boys and girls, enjoy modeling Play-Doh sets of clay while making ice cream cupcakes and playing Ice Cream Castle or Sweet Shoppe Double Desserts.
Children with the powerful h+ of both genders engage with great pleasure in Crazy Cuts and enjoy hairdressing with the Play-Doh clay.
Children with the powerful s+ are playing the dentist and gladly fill in and take out the teeth from the clay into forms with Doctor Drill and Fill set.
- As always, it all depends on the concrete child, - notices straight to the point the third mother in our group. – Mine right from the age of two has recognized only approved the locomotives. In the beginning, he has pushed the wooden ones by himself, while nowadays he plays with railway engines on the batteries.
- Could you tell us, please, what exactly he enjoys while playing?
- He really enjoys locomotive dragging lots of carriages. But he loses his temper because the engine with ten carriages is pretty sluggish.
- My son has had an engine with spinning wheels to play, but now he prefers a circular railway, where the train is moving around.
Children with the powerful s+ will choose to play machinery toys for those that lift or drag masses: locomotives, excavators, tractors, and trucks.
Children with the powerful e- will go for playing machinery toys based on rotating mechanisms: cement mixers, helicopters or moving around trains.
Children with the powerful d- fall in love with the garbage truck. They also love to put any small items in a jar, to load the blocks on their big truck, to drag out mom's necklaces from her jewelry box and put them back again and again. Generally speaking, they prefer to entertain themselves with any kind of container.
Some of those children pick up street poles, ropes, and nails - all these things seem to them highly valuable and necessary, - so they cheerfully bring these treasures into their houses and inevitably meet adults grumbling about the brought trash.
The only way to get on with the child who has a powerful d- is making a deal with him. You should grant him spacious wooden box in the basement – likewise, he would have his own big chest in good old times. He, in his turn, should put all things which have found and brought from the streets only into this box. A contract about the chest doesn't last forever. The older children are able to turn a half of a house, a mezzanine floor or a garage into a stuff storage. They hope that one-day mountains of things or useful information saved on their computer will be found helpful and needed.
- And my son has lost his mind over the Rescue Bots transformers. They are playing robots together with his crazy dad.
Children with the powerful h cherish playing with dolls of any size. They enjoy feeding, drinking, cuddling, and cradling their big and little dolls. The transformers, robots, and the soldiers all represent a human-like figure.
- I have to say that my daughters don't play with any dolls. They are preoccupied with carrying on the stroller, you know such those nice ones with the large wheels, all their stuffed animals and, surprisingly, engines.
In non-classical szondiana, the wish to rolling on something in the stroller is the kind of activity executed by e- need.
- My daughter's darling is a smart doll smelling like vanilla.
The doll, in a given example, represents the need h, and the pleasant smell relates to the activities of the need h as well. When two different key ideas appear in the same act, at the same time, psychologist designates this case with the exclamation, 'h!'.
Sometimes two different needs act together. Such case is named the 'chord of needs', like two sounds in one music chord. For example, playing doctor and patient with dolls creates a chord h+e+. Playing the war with soldiers or robots creates a chord h+s+. Sewing or knitting clothes for dolls doubles - h!. Playing tea party with dolls or paying the visit adds to chord m+. Playing with dolls in the dollhouse adds to chord d-.
Children with the powerful h+ enjoy playing with hair: to braid braids, to style hair of the people and dolls. The desires to gently touch with a hand, to embrace, to cuddle a Teddy bear are also kinds of activity executed by need h. A passion for creams, cologne and massage oils, cosmetics and perfumes, relates to the need h+ too.
- And what about teenagers?
- Teenagers fancy beauty-blogging and beauty-YouTubers, who are discussing cosmetics. It is the same meaning in a new form.
Children with the powerful d- really like the modeling from clay. They also enjoy a sand play, drawing and making crafts from paper-mache glue. But most of all they enjoy mixing paint with glue or blending different colors of clay in one bewildered mass.
The child with the powerful d, if he gets started to collect the series of toys, he wants to get it completed. A teenager collects money and wants to earn his own cash inspired to get more. They are deeply engaged in the material world.
Children with the powerful s+ enjoy a pound-a-peg toy with a hammer. It contains eight colorful wooden pegs built into the wooden frame. The passion to hammer, then flip it over and repeat the activity, again and again, represents the need s. (You can encounter those grown-up children like your spouses preoccupied with ongoing renovations).
Also, children with the powerful s need like bowling game and knocking down the pins. They are happy to beat each other with pillows, to make war; admire riding, driving a car at the amusement park, and being the fans at sporting events. Teenagers find appealing to go to the gym (the key ideas for s need is 'power' and 'endurance') and intensively engaged in physical activities.
Children with the powerful e- need enjoy launching humming top toy for hours. They like to twist hula hoop, to spend time with clockwork toys. Besides this, they take part in bicycle and skateboard activities, climbing the roofs and the trees around the neighborhood, riding the merry-go-round, carousels, swings, flip-flop, Ferris Wheel and Roller Coasters attraction, which is named "The Russian Mountains" in Europe and "The American Mountains" in Russia. Teenagers admire parachute jumping or bungee jumping and enjoy bike rides, climbing, and mountaineering.
Children with the powerful hy+ need cherish beautiful images. They love coloring and puzzles. Especially for the parents of toddlers who are exhausted by scrubbing the children's painting from the house furniture, the manufacturer Melissa & Doug has created paint-with-water coloring books named Water Wow. The older kids tend to draw by themselves without any template. They are usually attracted by the theatre. Teenagers are mesmerized by staging and design.
Children with the powerful p+ enjoy brain-teasers, constructors and Fifteen (The 15 puzzle).
- And what about children with the powerful e+ need? What activities do they like?
- They cherish animal toys, pony, horses, and kittens, butterflies, unicorns, Teddies, and so on. Children play with them like dolls. However, they take care of the real and imagined animals, not of babies or human-like beings. The key idea for e+ is 'to take care'.
Also, they get a great pleasure in playing with pets. One of the key ideas for e need is 'rotation', applied in any context. Children with the powerful e like dancing, dance in a circle and turning around. But most of all they love playing mothers and fathers or teacher and pupils at the school. Teenagers prefer to be a supervisor at a children's summer camp who entertain young children.
- Could you tell me please which kind of unconscious need executes the following activity: my child takes pleasure in sitting in the filled up bath and drives toys in the water. He calls it 'the expedition'. The items surrounding him go on adventures, but really it is revealed to me as a detailed story plot in his mind only.
- All practices and behaviors that based on 'to concoct', 'to devise', 'to compose', 'to invent' activities are usually executed by the powerful p+ need. Children who have a powerless p- need mostly have no plot for the game with other kids and rarely play alone immersed in their own world – exactly like the boy from your example. They lack originality, looking for older children to follow them, and waiting for ideas from their siblings.
Children who have a powerful p+ commonly discover the books and the world of literature in their early years of life. They boundlessly love listening to tales, read voraciously through the childhood, and take pleasure in writing and storytelling the creations of their own. Teenagers are attracted by scientific and research activities. They are strongly engaged in the invention process, elaboration on algorithms and computer programs.
- Oops, my favorite toy in childhood was a constructor, - said one of the participants. I've been building houses and towns from the blocks, but while building I imagined myself as an archeologist who had dug out an ancient city in the place, where dinosaurs and deserts were. I remember my mother's chains and bracelets stored in the beautiful box in her bedroom. They would serve for my fantasies as the lianas in the abandoned town where dinosaurs would escape from the oppressive heat. I've modeled other animals for my secret town from the clay, too. Stuffed toys meant nothing to me. Once I got a gift - a huge pink puppy. While playing a 'doctor' I imagined myself as a surgeon and cut his appendix during the operation. I have never liked dolls for their senseless face expression. To change the doll's clothes? It was absolutely uninteresting. By the way, the dolls would be turned into the excellent rocks in my dessert.
- Thank you for sharing.
- Olga Viсtorovna, you still have said nothing about letter k.
- The unconscious need k+ starts executing daily activities later than other needs already inherent in babies. When the child has happed the playing with shape sorters toy, the k+ need provides his interest to the shape and size recognition.
Children with the powerful need k+ are true LEGO fans. They may also dedicate hours to ship construction in a perfect scale or plane modeling, coping strictly to the original. Any complex set of details requiring to follow the instructions precisely in order to build the desirable subject brings them to the extreme level of delight.
Children with the powerful k+ like making copies using copy-paper, accurately measuring something while drawing or doing experiments, they also enjoy giving precise commands to Remote Control Toys. Teenagers are passionate about programming where the computer performs exactly the specified commands.
- And I'm still waiting for some words about books, cars, and blocks, - inquired the fifth mother.
- They traditionally stayed to be the favorite activities for generations of children. Building from the blocks requires two needs executing together. The need hy+ is correlated with visual-spatial performance and the need p+ is correlated with having the idea which is gradually being implemented. Blocks provide an execution of the chord hy+p+.
The game where car toys compete in the race is an activity executing need s. They are key ideas of 'power' and speed. Collecting cars and organizing cars in a garage are activities executing need d-. Reading books in privacy is m- need. To read a book aloud to someone means executing m+ need.
- Is it possible to predict what kind of adult child will become by his beloved toys and games?
- Yes, it is. But it is more important to emphasize that if his powerful need was realized neither in everyday practices nor in a professional occupation, he would live an unhappy life.
The exercise for material consolidation.
Try to write by heart eight different letters denoting different needs.
In Chapter 1.6. the reader could find Table 1 'Key ideas for unconscious needs' where the generalized description of eight clusters of unconscious needs is given.
